Much of Bansko’s enduring charm comes from the fact that it never started out as a purpose-built ski resort. Back in the nineteenth century it was one of Bulgaria’s richest market towns, as the maze of fortress-like stone houses at its centre still attests. Surrounded by timber-rich forests and pasture-perfect grazing land, Bansko remains a working agricultural community. The aroma of horse and goat droppings brings a pungent freshness to the mountain air, reminding today’s visitors that Bansko is one place where modern tourism and age-old traditions happily co-exist.

Meanwhile Bansko’s reputation as Bulgaria’s biggest construction site shows no signs of abating. Officials estimate that the town already boast 15,000 tourist beds, and capacity will expand to 30,000 before construction comes to an end. This shouldn’t have a negative bearing on the skiing season: building work is officially suspended from 1 December 2007 to 1 April 2008. However large tracts of suburban Bansko still resemble a lego city left unfinished by an unsupervised child. Who knows what kind of guide we will be producing in one year’s time.

Bansko is also the only Bulgarian ski resort that is centered around a historic old quarter -- a tangle of cobbled streets lined with thick stone walls and metal-studded gates behind which half-timbered double-story homes can be glimpsed. Many of these are now atmospheric mehanas, their windows aglow with crackling fires in winter and the sound of lilting traditional songs wafting out along with the delicious aroma of Bulgarian fare, served up at such reasonable prices that even those forced to go half- or full-board by hotels during peak season can afford to junk these (generally awful) meals and head into the old quarter for a decent spread. But if you're not high up in the mountains or settled around a table in Bansko, the picture is a little less pretty, as Bansko's innate charm is increasingly compromised by the unprecedented growth seen in the last few years -- every season sees more concrete poured into foundations that creep beyond the "official" building line as developers try to deliver on the promise of "uninterrupted views," with prospects for the hotels left in the wake of their greed ever-diminishing. The only justice is that 1 year from now, these developers will have to face the butt-end of the new kids on the block. The exception to this is the pricey Kempinski in Bansko: situated right on the western edge, where flower-edged balconies provide huge views of the Pirin, interrupted only by skiers flashing down the final run while others rise to meet the challenge of its powdered peaks.

This is one of the most frequented Bulgarian towns, 160 km south of Sofia, 60 km southeast of Blagoevgrad, 6 km south of Razlog and about 50 km north of Gotse Delchev. Its extremely fine location, rich cultural and historical heritage, excellent conditions for sports and holidaymaking have turned it into an attractive tourist centre.

Bansko was first mentioned as an independent settlement in 1576. By that time the population had lived in little scattered hamlets. During the 17th-18th century it flourished economically and culturally, gradually becoming a rich settlement of developed crafts and trade. The caravans of the Bansko people traveled between the Aegean Sea and Central Europe, carrying goods of wood, hides and iron to the markets there, bringing back cotton, fish, olive oil, etc. During that period whole families of Bansko became rich. By traveling extensively they were bringing the culture of different countries and cities. Some of them sent their children to study abroad. Along with the improvement of their lifestyle, many inhabitants of Bansko began to build two-floor fortress houses, which characteristic with their architecture, at the same time also providing the safety of their owners from the inroads of brigands.
